The confluence of several factors in the late 1980's and early 1990's increased the Department of Energy's activities and interest in exposure assessment such as OSHA's ANPR on exposure monitoring in 1988; AIHA's 1991 monograph; OTA's unfavorable reports on DOE's Clean-up efforts; and Public Law 102-484 - National Defense Reauthorization Act of 1993. To address the need for exposure assessment DOE has supported the efforts for developing the "Occupational Health Hazard Exposure Assessment Handbook for DOE Hazardous Waste Activities" as well as instrumentation suitable for real time chemical evaluation.
