The two demonstrations took place at:
A key feature of each demonstration was the fielding of state-of-the-practice technologies alongside innovative technologies. By fielding innovative technologies at actual sites, nontechnical as well as technical barriers could be identified.
Side-by-side comparison of innovative technologies with state-of-the-practice technologies, documented standard operating procedures and confirmatory off-site analysis are some of the necessary criteria for encouraging regulatory acceptance of innovative technologies. Prime importance was also placed on involving regulators in the fielding and evaluation of these technologies.
Because public involvement is critical in addressing environmental concerns, the Ames Lab ESC demonstrations always include open sessions, providing a forum for citizens, media, state and local government officials, EPA and state regulators, technology providers, environmental scientists, engineers and educators to offer input on this new approach and its role within the environmental cleanup process.
